Mortgage Fraud Resources

 

In over 20 years of performing post-closing audits and pre-funding reviews, we've seen every type of fraud and scam. Below are some excellent resources to learn more about mortgage frauds, trends, and contact information in case of mortgage fraud:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI): The FBI is the agency that handles most criminal mortgage fraud investigations.  You can report mortgage fraud to them by calling 202-324-3000 or by using their website at https://tips.fbi.gov.  Other federal agencies also investigate mortgage fraud but the FBI is generally the best place to start.

Fannie Mae: An excellent source to learn about types of mortgage fraud and current trends in fraud. To contact Fannie Mae directly regarding mortgage fraud: 

  • Dial 1-8002FANNIE and press 1 then 3.

  • Hours of Operation: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

  • Please have your Seller/Servicer number ready.

  • For general servicing related or loss mitigation questions, please contact the Servicer Resource Center.

Freddie Mac: Another excellent source to learn about mortgage fraud and trends. 

Freddie Mac’s Mortgage Reporting information is:

HUD:  If the case involves a mortgage that is insured by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (“HUD”), you can make a report directly to HUD’s Office of the Inspector General.  The Office of the Inspector General has a law enforcement arm that conducts criminal investigations.
